May is Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month 💚 I suffered from both postpartum anxiety and postpartum depression. I didn’t get treated for it, but I was blessed enough to have a support system to help me through it. Looking back, I wish I talked to my provider about it. My village let me know that it was okay to feel what I felt. They held me when I needed to cry. They listened when my thoughts were irrational, and helped me around my thoughts. Check up on your pregnant family members and friends. Check up on those newly postpartum. I had no idea how our feeding journey would go. No one told me my son would have tongue tie. No one told me my carpal tunnel would make positioning impossible. No one told me how much my breasts would hurt. No one told me that lactation consultants aren’t made equal. Looking at how happy and healthy my son was after 2 months of breastfeeding… I’m glad I had friends who helped me rest after his tongue-tie revision. I’m glad my husband held my baby as I nursed because my wrists hurt too much And I’m glad that I didn’t settle for lactation support that didn’t fit me. I owe my feeding journey to all the people who supported me. I nursed my son until he was 21 months old, and ended my first breastfeeding journey on my terms. April is Caesarean Awareness Month! My decision to have a c-section after attempting the unmedicated birth I had hoped for came after an emotional trigger. The doctor mentioned “risk of infection,” and I immediately thought of how an infection brought about the labor, birth, and passing of the twins I had not even a year and a half before. Although it wasn’t how I planned my birth, my c-section was still so positive. My son was placed on my chest 2 minutes after birth (and immediately tried to latch). Our birth team honored many of our birth plan wishes; and I feel like my husband and I made empowered, informed decisions throughout the whole process. Whether a c-section is planned or not, it is a brave choice. It is not the “easy way out.” It is still you birthing your baby. Don’t let anyone tell you any different. #cesareanawarenessmonth #csectionaeareness #csectionmama #csection
